Tesla App
Tesla app

The Powerwall system offers users the ability to monitor their energy consumption around the clock, providing them with continuous oversight of their energy usage and expenses. In addition to enabling users to manage their energy source, Powerwall allows customers to adjust the pricing schedule based on peak and off-peak periods, thereby optimizing savings automatically.

This functionality is made possible through the innovative Time-Based Control feature on the Tesla app. During times of low solar energy production, Powerwall can be programmed to charge when electricity costs are at their lowest, maximizing cost savings for users.

Over time, Powerwall becomes more intelligent through the use of an Energy-Forecasting algorithm, which learns users' energy consumption patterns and adjusts power delivery accordingly. This advanced technology also enables Powerwall to determine the optimal times for charging and discharging based on users' energy requirements.

Installation

The Tesla Powerwall 2 system is comprised of two main components: the main unit, which houses the battery and inverter/charger, and the gateway, which monitors energy usage within the home and manages the battery's charging and discharging processes. In the event of a power outage, the gateway ensures that the solar system continues to operate and the battery remains functional.

The gateway is a sleek and modern device, featuring a frosted glass front and compact dimensions of 380mm wide x 584mm tall x 127mm deep. Weighing in at 9.8kg, it is designed for outdoor use and can be securely locked to prevent unauthorized access.

Installation of the gateway typically takes place near the electricity meter, while the main battery unit should be positioned in close proximity to the gateway to minimize installation costs. Ideally, the system is installed in an integrated garage with the meter and fuseboard located indoors. If a garage is not available, the main unit is typically mounted on an exterior wall near the gateway and meter. A typical installation takes up to a day and requires two installers to complete the process.

Export limitation

One of the key advantages of the Tesla Powerwall 2 during installation is its built-in capability for export limitation. The Powerwall 2 has a maximum output of 5kW, but it can easily be adjusted to a maximum output of 3.68kW. This feature eliminates the need for DNO approval when installing the battery independently, a unique feature that sets it apart from other batteries on the market.

However, it is important to note that limiting the output to 3.68kW will result in a slower rate of charge and discharge, as well as reduce the battery's ability to power your home during a power outage by limiting the number of loads it can support. One workaround for this limitation is to initially install the battery with a 3.68kW limit while applying for DNO approval, a process that can take up to 11 weeks. Once approval is obtained, the setting can be easily adjusted to the full 5kW output capacity.

By taking advantage of the export limitation feature of the Tesla Powerwall 2, homeowners can streamline the installation process and ensure compliance with regulations without sacrificing performance.

Solar Compatibility

The Powerwall 2 is AC-coupled, making it compatible with any solar system when connected to the grid. It can be configured to enable any single-phase solar system with a rating of up to 7.6 kW AC to remain operational during a power outage, subject to installation restrictions.

Summary

The Powerwall 2 offers a beautiful, weatherproof, and wall-hung design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Its modern and minimalist design ensures that it is meant to be seen and not hidden away. The waterproof case allows for outdoor installation, making it a major selling point of the Powerwall.

The Powerwall comes with a 10-year warranty, guaranteeing unlimited cycles for self-consumption, time-based control, and backup. It is stackable up to 10 powerwalls allowing you to increase your storage up to 135kWh. After 10 years, the battery is expected to retain 80% of its initial capacity, ensuring long-lasting performance. Tesla provides strong warranty support with a UK freephone number for claims and monitors all batteries to ensure proper installation by certified installers.

With a total usable capacity of 13.5 kWh and a maximum power rating of 5kW, the Powerwall is well-suited for most residential properties. Tesla understands the importance of uninterrupted power supply during outages and has designed the system to cater to different load types to ensure a seamless transition during emergencies.

The Powerwall 2 provides an Export Limitation Certification, which is crucial for obtaining approval from the electricity grid (DNO) before installing battery systems. This certification guarantees that the battery will not export any power to the grid, making it easier to connect to the grid in areas with network constraints or when paired with a large solar system. Tesla stands out as one of the few manufacturers with this certification in place, ensuring a seamless integration of battery systems with the grid.
